Wilton Go Green is excited to announce the launch of our newest program—

Refill Not Landfill

DID YOU KNOW…

that billions of disposable single-use coffee cups are used annually in the U.S., along with the plastic lids and stirrers that are used with them?

While many think these cups are recyclable, the fact is that they are lined with plastic to reduce leakage, rendering them trash and creating a huge burden on an already strained waste system. The plastic lids, straws and stirrers must meet the same fate.

Fortunately, there is a very simple solution to this problem: reusable cups/mugs!

With the Refill Not Landfill program, Wilton Go Green is partnering with local businesses to encourage residents to bring their own reusable cups when buying hot and cold drinks.

Here’s How It Works:

  1. Bring a clean, reusable cup or mug for refill at a participating local business OR Buy a reusable cup or mug (10% off) from participating local retailers.
  2. Scan the QR code next to the the register and enter your name and email address.  You will be entered into a monthly prize drawing.
  3. Enjoy your beverage or new reusable mug!
  4. REPEAT – You can enter EVERY time you buy a drink at any of the participating businesses.

The program will run from April 1 until August 31.

Why Participate?

Here Are Some Facts:

• Billions of single-use cups are used each year in the U.S.

• Paper cups are NOT recyclable and end up in landfills or incinerators

• Connecticut has a huge solid waste problem – The state is expected to ship more than 850,000 tons of trash to out-of-state landfills each year*

* CT Insider, “Connecticut produces more trash than it can handle. How can it be resolved?” 1/15/23

FAQs

What type of cup can I use?

Any clean, reusable cup or mug can be used at participating locations.

If you don’t have a reusable cup, these Wilton stores are offering 10% off reusable cups for the Refill Not Landfill program

What if I don’t know how to scan a QR code, or if I don’t see the sign with the code at the register?

If you are at a participating shop you can also ask the cashier for a receipt, have them put the Refill Not Landfill sticker on the receipt, and then email a picture of the receipt to refill@wiltongogreen.org

How will I know if a business is participating?

We will keep the list here up to date with all of the participating outlets.  Also, participating shops can display a Refill Not Landfill sign on the door, and there should be a Refill Not Landfill sign with a QR code at the register.

How do the monthly drawings work?

Each month, Wilton Go Green will compile all of the entries from both the online submissions and the emails that include a picture of receipts, and one winner will be selected at random.  The prize is a $25 Wilton Chamber of Commerce Gift Card.
